The story of Sonata began in 1988 when the first generation of this model was introduced. Initially, all Hyundai Sonata came with 4-cylinder injection engines with a working volume of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.35 liters (the latter for the North American market) and power from 99 to 117 liters. from. respectively.

At the end of 1989, a powerful 3-liter 146-horsepower Mitsubishi V6 72 engine, capable of accelerating the car to 200 km / h, began to be installed on the Sonata I. Acceleration to 100 km / h took 10.5 seconds.
Three years later, the car was restyled.
In 1993, the second generation Sonata was released. The car turned out much more beautiful and tidy than its predecessor. The comfortable seats became softer, visibility from the driver’s seat improved noticeably, the suspension was adjusted. This year’s cars boast impressive basic equipment: power steering, airbag for the driver, ABS, cruise control, air conditioning with climate control, power windows and rear-view mirrors, remote control of the trunk and fuel tank covers. At Sonata of the first generation there was nothing of the kind. The design of the front instrument panel has become much more solid and interesting.
By the time Sonata II arrived, engineers at the Korean company had worked hard to improve powertrain performance. Engine modernization was primarily reflected in reduced fuel consumption and softer operation. Since 1993, instead of the 117-horsepower 2.35-liter unit, they began to install a 2-liter 139-horsepower in-line “four” Mitsubishi G4 63 with a 2-shaft cylinder head.
In 1996, the third generation of the Sonata appeared. A distinctive feature of this model is, first of all, a high level of comfort for little money. The car has impressive dimensions, original design and a spacious interior.

The next generation did not take long to wait, just two years later, in 1998 at the Turin Motor Show, Hyundai introduced the fourth generation Sonata to the public. The car still provides decent placement both front and rear. The driver’s seat has five mechanical adjustments. The four-spoke steering wheel is adjustable in height over a wide range and in the lower position it occupies an almost vertical position.
The luggage compartment is quite spacious, but there is one inconvenience – the back of the rear seat does not recline, therefore, it is not possible to increase the size of the trunk if necessary.
Sonata is equipped with a two-liter 140-horsepower engine. The car confidently holds the road at high speeds. It has a good ride. And on small irregularities, and on the waves of asphalt pendants reliably isolate the body from the road terrain.
In 2001, the fifth generation Sonata was shown to the general public. Hyundai specialists subjected the car to drastic changes. Modern design and latest technologies have allowed to create a competitive car, which is characterized by a harmonious and relevant appearance for the automotive market of that time. The car aroused great interest and was in demand among buyers.
New headlights and a bumper gave an image of aristocracy. Thanks to the finely outlined smooth lines of the marker lights, the model looked attractive from any angle. Side moldings add elegance and increase protection. The twin headlights are in the form of intersecting ovals. And the contours of the grille are underlined by a chrome trim.

The interior began to look different, which significantly increased in size and acquired new parts and materials. They tried to make it as convenient and practical as possible. The instrument panel and center console underwent a redevelopment. Large scales of the speedometer and tachometer are now spaced along the edges of the flap, and the temperature and fuel sensors are grouped in the center, and the liquid crystal line of the on-board computer is located below. On the center console, the weather block and the audio system changed places.
The safety level has grown significantly due to: special crushing zones, which are designed to absorb the main impact force, steel beams in the doors, which, if necessary, protect the driver and passengers, in addition to this, a rigid roof and floor. The car is also equipped with a stability control system – an excellent assistant to the driver in the passage of difficult sections of the road. When skidding, the TCS traction control system, which works in conjunction with the electronic engine control system and anti-lock braking system ABS, is indispensable.
The basic equipment offered a full power package, a battery of 68 ampere-hours, Sachs shock absorbers, disc brakes on all wheels, two airbags with a passenger detector and a computer that calculates the strength of the airbag.
Under the hood, either a 2-liter 4-cylinder in-line engine rated at 131 hp, or a 2.7-liter V6 / 178 hp
