Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide is built on the AM / VH platform – on the same as the 2-door DB9. The platform was stretched by a good 11 inches, and it turned out a kind of 4-door coupe, as its creators position Rapide. The vehicle is 5019 mm long and 1359 mm high. Relatively short overhangs, a long wheelbase (3.02 m), to freely accommodate 4 passengers.

The interior of Rapide is made in the best traditions of the Aston Martin brand. On the front panel is veneer of valuable wood species. Partially carbon fiber and matted aluminum, everywhere handmade. Fine leather upholstery. By the way, only one master is engaged in interior decoration. This is a guarantee of maintaining a unified style and the highest quality. Leather is custom-tailored from Scotland, and all tailoring takes approximately 35 hours.

Individual seats are mounted on both sides of the center console (the entire length of the cabin); electric heating of pillows and backs, servomechanisms of regulation with memory. At the rear of the Rapide are full-fledged two seats that are ideally tailored for riders. But getting into the second row is not easy. A high threshold and a low roof significantly complicate this procedure.

A hinged rear door gives access to the loading space with a capacity of 300 liters (when fully seated in places) to 750 liters, if the backrests of the rear seats are folded.

The styling of the front of the cabin is borrowed from the Aston Martin DB9 – the central tunnel seems to go into the panel. It houses climate control and audio controls, as well as buttons for selecting automatic transmission modes and an ignition switch. On the front panel below there are three more buttons designed to add adrenaline to the driver and passengers. By pressing one, the stabilization system is switched off (partially or completely), the other activates the sports mode (the motor reacts more sharply to gas, the engine brakes harder when lowering gears), and the third makes the suspension even harder.

The DB9 inherited a high-torque, powerful engine: a V-shaped 12-cylinder with a working volume of 5935 cubes. The all-aluminum 48-valve design is configured for 477 hp for the Aston Martin Rapide. at 6 thousand revolutions; the highest torque is 600 Nm. The engine works with a 6-speed hydromechanical “automatic” ZF Touchtronic II – no options. Although the driver has the possibility of forced control of the automatic transmission – through the steering column switches.

The architecture of Aston Martin Rapide is classic: front engine, rear wheels. Moreover, the massive gearbox is assigned to the rear axle (transaxle scheme), as is customary for super sports like the same DB9, Chevrolet Corvette or Ferrari California. Thanks to this arrangement, Rapide has an ideal axle weight distribution: 49/51%.

Aston Martin experts have invested a considerable part of their talent in the chassis settings. The principle of building the foundation of the Rapide body is borrowed from aviation. In order to preserve the best geometry and rigidity of the chassis, the aluminum panels are joined with industrial glue and not with welding. This is one of the reasons that the Rapide steers easily and accurately, despite the extra pounds, combining the sportiness of tenacity with the smoothness of the limo.

Suspension front and rear “formula” (Aston Martin DB9) – on double wishbones; correct kinematics. Coil springs, transverse stabilizers. And single-tube (gas-filled) dampers of adjustable stiffness: Adaptive Damping System – an adaptive damping system. Bridgestone Potenza S001 sports tires of unequal axial size: 245 / 40R in front and 295 / 35R in rear – on 20-inch alloy wheels. The rack and pinion steering gear is equipped with a Servotronic servo amplifier, the “steering wheel” makes 3 turns from lock to lock. Brembo brakes with ventilated discs (diameter 390 mm front and 360 rear) combined design. Working surfaces are made of special cast iron, while the hubs are made of aluminum alloy; that’s easier.
