Acura TLX Review
The debut of the Acura TLX sedan took place in March 2014 at the motor show in New York. The car was presented to the Russian public at the end of August at MIAS-2014. It is noteworthy that this sedan immediately replaced a couple of models – TL and TSX.
Over the exterior of the car, experts from design studios in Los Angeles and Raymond (Ohio) worked. By their joint efforts, a stylish and dynamic appearance of the sedan was born. There were not so many serious differences between the conceptual and serial versions of the model. When preparing the car for the conveyor, he received a simpler front bumper, large rear-view mirrors with integrated LED turn signal indicators and rims of smaller diameter.
Acura TLX looks impressive, aggressive, original and modern. The “predatory” face, crowned with a sharp nose and narrowed optics, creates the image of a serious car. The fully LED Jewel Eye LED headlamps are subtly inscribed on the border between the powerful bumper and the hood with elegant stampings. The front part is also decorated with a branded radiator grill, foglights with LEDs, a splitter along the edge of the bumper and slots of the lower air intake. The contours of the body are distinguished by soft and sophisticated lines, smooth contours and transitions of one surface of the body to another. Sportiness to the body profile is added by the original rapidly ascending window sill line and huge wheel arches. The back of the body is no less attractive than the full-face and sedan profile. It is characterized by a solid bumper, a compact trunk lid with a spoiler and graceful lamp shades of overall lighting equipment with LED filling.
It is worth noting that the Acura TLX is a large car with a body length of 4831 mm and a wheelbase of 2775 mm, while the sedan rests on the ground with huge wheels – 265 / 35ZR20 tires on fashionable and stylish alloy wheels of the 20th radius. The ground clearance of the Akura TLX is quite acceptable for Russian road conditions – 139 mm.
The interior of the novelty has a classic 5-seat layout and offers huge open space in the front row. But the back is a bit cramped, which is in the legs, above the head. Ergonomics show the highest level. All important systems and controls are located in a zone comfortable for the driver. The main instruments: the speedometer and tachometer are analog, their readings are easy to read and additionally duplicated in digital and graphic form. Also on the dashboard there are analog gauges of temperature of a cooling liquid and fuel level. Only high-quality expensive materials were used in the interior decoration, including valuable wood species and metal inserts, natural and artificial leather, soft plastic and chrome decor elements.
Under the hood of the Acura TLX, one of two gasoline units is installed. The basic version of Techno received a 4-cylinder in-line aspirated engine with a displacement of 2.4 liters, equipped with direct fuel injection, a 16-valve timing and a variable valve timing system. Its maximum return is 208 hp, and the upper limit of torque is 247 Nm. The engine is aggregated with a unique 8-speed gearbox – the Japanese have prepared for the Acura TLX the world’s first robotic gearbox with two clutches and a torque converter (DCT), which guarantees unsurpassed smooth operation and high traction potential at the start.
The top engine was a 6-cylinder gasoline “aspirated” V-shaped layout, with a working volume of 3.5 liters. In addition to direct injection and a variable valve timing system, this engine is also equipped with a Start / Stop system and a VCM system that cuts off half of the cylinders at low loads. The power of the 3.5-liter unit is 290 hp, and the peak of its torque falls at around 355 Nm. As a gearbox for the top-end motor, the Japanese offer a new 9-band “automatic gearbox” ZF with an electronic gear selector instead of the usual selector, as well as a manual shift function using the shift paddles.
The TLX fuel tank holds 65 liters of gasoline. It is made of impact resistant plastic for light weight and durability. Located in a protected area in front of the rear suspension.
As standard, the sedan is equipped only with front-wheel drive, complemented by the Precision All-Wheel Steer (P-AWS) system, which steers the rear wheels to improve handling, maneuverability and stability on the road. The same system, slightly turning the rear wheels inward, allows you to optimize the braking of the sedan, especially in emergency cases. As an option for the version of the car with V6, you can order all-wheel drive with the advanced new generation Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system with an active rear cross-axle differential, hydraulic actuators and a retuned traction vector control system. As a result, the torque arriving at the rear axle (and this is 45% on the line and up to 70% in rotation).
