Citroen ZX

ZX debuted in 1991. The model lasted on the conveyor for more than six years and enjoyed great success in Europe. The predecessor of the ZX, Citroen GS, was once very popular, so the company’s specialists had the task not to harm. The car was created with an eye on its predecessor. Even the sizes should have been the same. But in the end, the ZX turned out to be a completely new car, even outwardly not similar to the previous model.
The first ZX was released with a 5-door hatchback. At the end of 1992, a 3-door version appeared, and in November 1993, the ZX Break station wagon.

In July 1994, they restyled the model. It was simply necessary to eliminate structural and technological flaws that were revealed in the car during the first years of operation. Instead of a “blank” radiator lining, a false radiator grille with an emblem in the middle appeared.

The five-door Citroen ZX was assembled in France, the three-door – in Spain, and the limited-edition ZX 16V series was also produced there.

Station wagon ZX Break took its place of honor in the lineup Citroen. An additional 20 cm of length compared to the basic hatchback went for the future: the boot volume is 490/1580 liters versus 325/1145 liters on the hatchback.

The rear sofa of some ZXs has a remarkable ability to move back and forth, thus adjusting the volume of the luggage compartment – a unique solution for those times. The back of the rear sofa in the Advantage and Aura versions reclines entirely.

Present in the ZX and the traditional French decision to place a spare tire under the trunk.

Four basic equipment levels were offered. The simplest is Reflex. In the middle is Advantage. At the top of the gamut is Aura. There was also a sports version of Volcane with powerful engines and maximum equipment.

As is customary with Citroen, the range of modifications has been expanded due to many limited series and special designs. Allure, Audace, Flash, Fugue, Miami, Prestige – all these versions had specific differences from the standard nomenclature: sports steering wheels, exclusive upholstery materials, tinted windows and other nice features.

The Citroen ZX range of powertrains is directly inherited from the AX and BX models with the same transmissions.

There were six gasoline engines. Two single-injection: 1.1 liter (60 hp) and 1.4 liter (75 hp). The rest are with distributed injection. 1.6 L (90 PS) was available for the Aura. 1.8 liters (103 hp) – for the sports three-door ZX Furio. The most powerful engines are two-liter: 2.0 liters (122 hp) for the Volcane version and the top 16V version with a power unit of 150 hp.

Three variants of diesel engines from the BX model were installed on the ZX. The oldest is an atmospheric 1.8 liter (60 hp). The other two are 1.9-liter, with 71 and 90 hp. (turbo). Engines are characterized by a high degree of reliability and efficiency.

Front suspension – McPherson struts, rear – torsion bar. A Citroen ZX passive-throttle rear suspension makes it possible to corner at high speed and with minimal roll.

Power steering was installed only on some ZX. Amplifiers and ABS are the prerogative of expensive ZX versions. The front brakes are disc on all versions, and starting with 1.6 “gasoline” – ventilated. Behind everywhere are drums, except for two-liter gasoline versions.

Citroen ZX is a car that perfectly combines simplicity and comfort, low cost of maintenance and excellent build quality, durability of nodes and low fuel consumption.

In the entire history of the Citroen ZX, more than one and a half million cars have been produced. In 1997, the last European ZX rolled off the assembly line, giving way to the Citroen Xsara. Citroen ZX is still being produced in China at the joint Sino-French venture Donfeng-Citroen Automobile Co. Ltd.
